Dozens of cast-on techniques exist: one-strand or two-strand; loose and flowing or elastic and springy; invisible or decorative.  Everyone has their favorite cast-on technique and usually sticks to it but having choices is key to producing the results you want for every project you make.

Smooth, light colored, worsted-weight yarn in two colors; needles of a size appropriate for your yarn, including two circulars, a long Magic Loop circular, or a set of dpns; needles two sizes smaller than you would normally use with your yarn; a crochet hook
